Performance of HbA1c Assays in relation to clinical requirements for its use in diabetes

HbA1c is a major test in the medical laboratory because the test result is of conclusive relevance for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes, a high prevalence chronic disease. Therefore, the quality of the test is of utmost clinical importance. The impact of bias and imprecision will be discussed and requirements for diagnosis and monitoring treatment be derived from the IFCC model for quality targets.

To demonstrate the present status of HbA1c tests, the outcome of EurA1c and the international PT trial with participation of more than 5000 labs in 20 countries will be shown.

About Dr. Cas WEYKAMP

Dr. Cas Weykamp is a Clinical Chemist and former Director of the MCA Laboratory at Queen Beatrix Hospital in Winterswijk, the Netherlands.

A recognized expert in HbA1c standardization, he served as Network Coordinator of the worldwide network of 16 reference laboratories operating the IFCC reference method for HbA1c and was a member of the IFCC Committee on Education and Use of Biomarkers in Diabetes. He is also an advisor to the National Glycohemoglobin Standardization Program (NGSP) and has worked extensively on the harmonization, standardization, and external quality assessment (EQA) of laboratory testing.

In the Netherlands, Dr. Weykamp coordinates several EQA programs on behalf of SKML, including a major HbA1c scheme that formed the basis of his PhD research. He has also contributed to numerous international initiatives through the IFCC and AACC, focusing on proficiency testing, commutability, harmonization, and clinical laboratory quality improvement. A frequent speaker at international scientific meetings, Dr. Weykamp has authored numerous publications in the field of laboratory medicine and diabetes diagnostics.
