From Signal to Diagnosis: Anti-MCV and Early Rheumatoid Arthritis
Early diagnosis remains one of the most critical challenges in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), where timely intervention can significantly alter disease progression and long-term patient outcomes. While established biomarkers such as anti-CCP have transformed diagnostic approaches, increasing attention is being given to additional autoantibodies that may provide complementary clinical insight.
We will explore the emerging role of anti-MCV (anti–mutated citrullinated vimentin) in the early identification and management of RA, thanks to its relationship to inflammatory processes, and its potential value in patients with early arthritis. Clinical cases suggest that anti-MCV may offer clinically relevant information beyond simple positivity, including associations with disease activity, radiographic progression, and response to therapy.

About Gerd-Rüdiger Burmester, M.D
Prof. Gerd-Rüdiger Burmester is a globally recognized rheumatologist and clinical immunologist who has made significant contributions to the advancement of rheumatoid arthritis research, patient care, and medical education. Since 1993, he has served as Director of the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Charité University Medicine Berlin, one of Europe's leading academic medical centers.
In recognition of his outstanding achievements in rheumatology, Prof. Burmester was awarded the prestigious title of Master of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), one of the highest honors bestowed by the organization. This distinction recognizes individuals whose scientific accomplishments, dedication to patient care, commitment to education, and service to the profession have had a lasting impact on the field of rheumatology.
Prof. Burmester has held several prominent leadership positions within the international rheumatology community, including serving as President of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) from 2015 to 2017. He continues to support international collaboration as EULAR's International Liaison Officer and serves as President of the Foundation for Research in Rheumatology (FOREUM). His leadership and scientific expertise have helped shape advances in rheumatic disease diagnosis, treatment, and research worldwide.
