von Willebrand Multimer Analysis

Multimer assay simplified.

Published date: 3/8/2021 | Modified date: 6/9/2026

How do we diagnose von Willebrand Disease

von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a genetic bleeding disorder caused by missing or defective von Willebrand factor (VWF).

Since von Willebrand disease is complex, its diagnosis requires a comprehensive panel of tests to ensure accurate detection and proper subtype classification. Multimer analysis is a key component of this diagnostic workup, providing essential information to clinicians for optimal patient management.

HYDRAGEL von WILLEBRAND MULTIMERS kit is designed for the detection of abnormalities in the VWF multimers distribution related to a hemorrhagic diathesis. The test allows to assess the overall size distribution of von Willebrand factor multimers in human plasma using agarose gel electrophoresis and immunofixation, with the semi-automated HYDRASYS 2 SCAN FOCUSING instrument.

Key benefits

von Willebrand Multimer Analysis: a simplified, standardised gel method, delivering results within a single day.
  • Semi-Automated Test

    providing standardised and reproducible results.

  • Simplified Technique

making this test accessible to any laboratory.

  • Within-Day Results

compared to in house tests delivering results in 4-5 days.

  • Traceability of the Result

    with densitometry-based interpretations.

  • Assay procedure of 6 hours.

Main characteristics

Test principle

HYDRAGEL von WILLEBRAND MULTIMERS allows separating small, intermediate, and large molecular weight multimers.

The assay is carried out in two stages:

  • Sample pre-treatment followed by an electrophoresis done in SDS agarose gel to separate proteins according to their molecular weight.
  • Direct immunofixation of multimers in the gel using anti-human VWF antibody followed by immunoenzyme staining to visualize the different multimers.

The semi-automated HYDRASYS 2 SCAN FOCUSING instrument performs all the steps needed to obtain gels ready for visual and densitometry-based interpretations.
